Winter Storm Ready: A Bergen County Homeowner's Guide to Snow, Ice, and Power Outages
by
New Jersey winters can go from mild to messy quickly. Snow, freezing temperatures, ice and power outages can all create problems for your home, especially if you wait until the forecast calls for six inches to prepare.
A little planning before the first major storm can help protect your property, prevent expensive repairs and make winter considerably less stressful.
Know Your Town's Snow Removal Rules
Sidewalk clearing requirements vary by municipality, so check your town's ordinance before winter arrives. Some towns require property owners to clear snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks within a specific period after snowfall ends.
If you hire a snow removal company, book early. Reliable contractors often fill their seasonal routes before the first major storm.
Prepare for a Power Outage
If outages are a concern, consider whether a portable or standby generator makes sense for your home.
Portable generators are generally less expensive but require proper outdoor placement and manual setup. Permanently installed standby generators can automatically power selected systems or larger portions of a home, depending on their capacity.
Never operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement or other enclosed space because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Prevent Frozen Pipes and Ice Dams
Know where your main water shutoff is located and insulate vulnerable pipes in colder areas of the home. During extreme cold, maintaining adequate indoor heat can help protect plumbing.
Ice dams are another common winter headache. They can form when heat escaping through the roof melts snow that later refreezes near colder roof edges. Proper attic insulation, ventilation and air sealing can help address the conditions that contribute to them.
Build a Basic Storm Kit
Keep flashlights, batteries, portable chargers, bottled water, basic food supplies, medications and a first-aid kit somewhere easy to access.
Don't forget the house itself. Keep ice melt, snow shovels and winter tools ready before they're suddenly sold out everywhere.
Winter Maintenance Matters at Resale, Too
Preventing water intrusion, frozen pipes and roof damage isn't just about getting through one storm. Consistent maintenance helps protect the long-term condition of your property.
If you're considering selling during the winter, a cleared driveway, safe walkway, functioning exterior lighting and well-maintained home also make a much better first impression on buyers.
